I don't use it much anymore...but I had a minor in Printing once. ;)

This was an image that came to me in a dream back in my freshman year in college. It was so strong that I defied my current art assignment and made this instead...explaining to the teacher that it just had to be done. Thankfully I had an understanding teacher who knew how one shouldn't deny inspiration when it hits. :D

This is a zinc plate etching, where you carve the picture into a metal plate, cover the parts you don't want to have ink, and then coat the rest. After you buff it to get the right tones of ink, you run it through the printing press and hope to the gods that the plate doesn't move, lol.

Very nice. It would fit it nicely with a very epic game or poster trying to get an idea across.
Or just plain fun to do :p

My witch of an art teacher would have flunked me for stuff like that

I have to admit, I was inspired by having to read this book back in high school: [link]

While many people don't like Ayn Rand, I have to stand up and say that I did like this one....all politics aside.

Etching was a pain in the rear because my hand cramped from carving detailed work into metal...but it felt worth it every time a print turned out the way I wanted it to. :)

I lucked out with that teacher, to be sure. I've had others who would flunk me for that kind of thing too. ;)

Thanks! I did this years ago back in college...one of my better prints, I think. I had found my old portfolio again and decided to scan some stuff today. :)

Lol....I know what you mean. Every once and a while I like to post my old college stuff to remind myself that I'm not just a comic/fantasy artist. ;)

True, it's good to have some variety. However, art such as still life is quite boring to me. One could be well-rounded and still have unique work... such as things NOT involving painting flowers or buildings, etc. I really want to find some traditional art that I would like to do. *sigh*

Understandable. The few times I got stuck with doing still-lifes at school, I always tried to put odd items together to make them uniquely my own (action figures, interesting fabrics, etc).

One example: My teacher told us to pick a subject and draw it in a picture 30 times, so I chose "hands." I did a drawing of our tv lounge with 30 disembodied hands crawling all over it. :D

I also ended up taking watercolor classes a lot when I had to fill my painting requirement...because at least then I got to enjoy the outdoors more. :sun:

I did an action figure still life once... the best still life I've done I think. ^.^
Now that's unique! That's so cool....
I'd like to learn to paint scenery too, but sometimes it's just so boring...

I agree about the scenery...which is also why I took Watercolor class, as it was much easier to do sunsets and a few well placed trees as a background...and if you goofed up, it still tended to look pretty. ;)
